Medicine Wheel Bison Farm
No other animal is more representative of the great strength and determination of the country
than the American Buffalo. From the massive adults to the frisky calves, buffalo are intelligent.
curious, dignified and tremendously strong. We're sure you will enjoy watching these
magnificent animals as well as sampling the delicious and healthful buffalo meat served at
The Homestead.
About The Area
Northern Maine is known for it's endless miles of primeval forest
and shadowy bogs which lure hunters from all over the country in their quest for that all time
trophy. Maine is broken up into Deer Management Districts, and though some districts harvest
more deer than we do, they also have many more hunters. So if you are looking for that one on
one experience as well as the Trophy, The Homestead Lodge is the place.
Fishing
Trout, Salmon, and Small Mouth Bass fishing are at it's best in the area. You can fish
the Aroostook or St. Croix Stream or take your pick of brooks, streams, ponds, and numerous
lakes in the area. Our back boundary is the Aroostook River and you can enjoy great fly fishing
without any one else for miles.
Bear
Baited bear hunts are fully guided. We bait the entire 30 days prior
to the season to guarantee active stands. We lease
thousands of acres of prime bear country; yet limit the number of clients to
ensure personalized service and high success ratios. Tree stands
are individually set up for bow, firearm, or camera. We transport clients to and from stands and
assist
in getting your game out as well as skinning, quartering, and
freezing for travel. Our kill ratios has been 70 to 100 percent with sightings 95 percent, while
putting 1 to 3 bear in the record books every year.
Moose
The Homestead is located in the Central Zone and just across Route 11 from the Northeast Zone
and our kill ratio is 100 percent. We are fully qualified to find the moose you're looking for and
fully equipped to get it out. Permits are issued by lottery drawing and may be
obtained from Dept. Fisheries & Wildlife, Moose Application, 284
State Street Station 41, Augusta, Maine 04333
Bird/Hare
The Homestead has some of the best bird and
hare cover in the state with old apple orchards and overgrown
pastures, combined with dense evergreens and alders. Well trained dogs can play a big part in
your hunt and we offer a 12 x 12 kennel for your convenience and your dogs' pleasure, at no
extra charge.
Coyote
The coyote is considered intelligent, elusive, and vicious if
cornered and as a game animal is definitely in a class by itself. Maine has no closed season for
coyote so you can double your hunting adventure.
Trophy Whitetail
Having a minimum amount of hunting pressure and heavy cover has allowed our deer to reach
maturity for large racks and heavy bodies with many of our deer dressing well over 200 pounds.
Whether the hunt you're looking
for is an out-of-the-way place for the aggressive of heart or a
groomed deer run on our privately owned property, we will direct you to active areas and go
over maps to ensure you have an understanding of the vast woods.
Snowmobile/Ski/Snowshoe
Snowmobiling is a way of life in Northern Maine and a long awaited event at The Homestead as
are cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
The beauty of the wilderness is particularly spectacular in Oxbow. Combine cozy
accommodations, home-cooked meals, and small-town hospitality with some of the finest
snowmobiling trail connections in the State. The fully-groomed ITS-85 runs through The
Homestead property making us the ideal base for those who wish to explore the hundreds of
miles of trail north to Canada as well as points south. We have gas, oil and storage
available.
Whether you come for the weekend or stay for awhile, let your winter adventure begin at The
Homestead Lodge.
Canoe/Hike/Relax
The Aroostook River is our back boundary and you can put a canoe in for a day trip to the next
town where we will pick you up, or we also offer an Allagash Waterway canoe trip where we
will drop you off and pick you up. All of our ITS snowmobile trails become great hiking trails
in the warm weather with an over abundance of wildlife. Maine has some very interesting and
beautiful wild flowers (have you ever seen bright yellow Lady Slippers?), as well as some unique
or even rare birds to watch.
